The Lebanon Tigers outplayed Crawfordsville in all aspects of the game on Friday night at Lebanon, handing the Athenians their first loss of the season, 62-56.
The Athenians look to get back on track this weekend with a great road test at West Lafayette on Friday night. Crawfordsville then returns home Saturday night to host North Putnam in the second game of the first double-header weekend of the season.
The junior varsity defeated Lebanon by one point on Thursday night, running their record to 3-0.

Athenians Start Season With Two Wins....Face Big Test at Lebanon on Friday Night
The Athenians opened up the season with a hard-fought, come from behind 58-54 win at Greencastle on Wednesday, November 25. Trent Crabtree led the Athenians on the offensive end with 31 points on 8-15 from the floor and 13-17 from the free throw line. It was the effort on the defensive end, however, that helped the Athenians come from behind in the season opener. Led by 5 steals from Caleb Rasmussen and four from Crabtree, the Athenians forced 26 Greencastle turnovers en route to the win.
After taking Thanksgiving day off, the team put together a great practice on Friday and shoot-around on Saturday. It paid off in the form of a 61-43 victory in Saturday night's home opener. After another slow first quarter which saw the Athenians dig a five point hole, it was the defensive effort that again helped the Athenians take control of the game. The Athenians held Benton Central scoreless for nearly 8 minutes from late in the first quarter until late in the second quarter, which helped turn a 5 point defecit into a 12 point lead. While Benton Central would cut the lead back to 6, the Athenians never trailed the rest of the way. A balanced Athenian offensive attack saw four Athenians reached double figures - Trent Crabtree with 19 and 11 apiece for Kyle Blankenbeckler, Nolan Harris, and Caleb Rasmussen.

The junior varsity team is also off to a 2-0 start.
The junior varsity hosts Lebanon on Thursday night and the varsity travels to Lebanon on Friday night. This will be a great test for both teams and we hope to see lots of Athenian fans cheering us on against a very talented Lebanon team.

November 16 - Johnny Provolone's Night

Come out to Johnny Provolone's Pizza in downtown Crawfordsville between 5 and 8 pm on Monday, November 16 to help support the Crawfordsville Boy's Basketball program. Enjoy great food, get waited on by members of this year high school team, and a portion of the proceeds go to support the boy's basketball program.
As always, we are thrilled to partner with such a great business and restaurant and hope to see everyone at Johnny P's on Monday night.
All Rosters Finalized....Tuttle Tip-Off Tournament Tomorrow
All team's rosters have been finalized and are available in the right hand column of the page.
Things are starting to pick up now with youth league teams having their second game tomorrow morning at North or South, and our 7th and 8th graders tipping off with the annual Tuttle Tip-Off Tournament at 9 am at CHS. The season opener for the 6th grade is less than a week away. The freshman, JV and Varsity teams are wrapping up their first week of practice and open up in less than two weeks. Come out and support as many of the Athenian teams as possible!

Youth League Rosters and Schedules Finalized
68 future Athenians in grades 3, 4, and 5 will represent the Crawfordsville program in the Montgomery County Winter Youth League. Each of the three grades will have three teams. Rosters and game schedules have been finalized and are available in the 'youth leagues and camps' section on the right hand side of this page.
Team specific practice schedules will be communicated with each team's head coach and are not available on the website.
All participants got off to a great start with two great practices at CHS on October 26 and October 27. Games tip-off this Saturday at CHS, North, and South. We have great people coaching these teams and it is going to be a great winter for the future of our high school program!

Almost Time......
The chill that we find in the air this time of year, combined with the return to school from fall break means basketball season is here (or at least getting close).
The middle school teams are off and running this week with official practice. The energy level and enthusiasm with all three teams has been tremendous.
The youth league kicks off on Monday and Tuesday night of next week here at CHS.
The high school has to wait the longest; first official practice is not until November 9, but we are hard at work with skill development and conditioning sessions until then. It is going to be a great winter of basketball, at all levels, here in Crawfordsville!
3rd, 4th, and 5th graders and parents: We are thrilled with the amount that are pre-registered for our youth league. We will be taking walk-up registrations on Monday night before our first workout (6 pm) at CHS. We hope to see all of you here on Monday and Tuesday night (save the football players who have a game Tuesday - we will only see them on Monday) - After Tuesday night, you will be contacted by your coach for the winter and practices will be coordinated with your team and coach after that.

On Accountability and Teams
One of my favorite websites is http://www.hoopthoughts.blogspot.com/.
This is more than a basketball website, as the messages that are posted on there relate to success in life and not just basketball.
One of this week's posts comes from Jon Katzenbach and Douglas Smith's work, The Wisdom of Teams, and it deals with how a group can become a team; only by holding itself accountable.
Click on the link below for that post.
http://hoopthoughts.blogspot.com/2009/10/team-accountability.html
We can only expect to become a true team when all involved are putting forth real work toward a common purpose. Until that happens, out ability to become a true team is all talk.
With the first practice just 33 days away, all Athenians must use this last month to do everything they can do to be ready for a great winter, individually and collectively.
In basketball, this means thousands of extra shots, extra time with coaches and teammates on skill work, extra time and reps in the weight room, and raising one's own level of conditioning.
Athenians - Do not let a day go by without doing something to help our common purpose; to be the best team we can be this winter.
